August 2024 Update

We are seeking new members to join our volunteer Board of Directors and help us strategize and launch new programs after the last few years of less activity due to the pandemic.

The SLC’s mission is to provide a unique living laboratory that educates and encourages sustainability practices in daily life. Through community partnerships, we deliver hands-on programs that demonstrate sustainability in action and inspire environmental excellence.

Activities:

Prior to the pandemic, the SLC hosted activities such as urban farming/gardening workshops, a foraging fair, a sustainability holiday market, and educational events focused on green building and pollinators. In 2022, the SLC won an AARP grant to pave and improve the area between the greenhouses  and enhance accessibility for multi-generational groups.

So far this year, the SLC has partnered with the PCC’s Urban Farm Committee to secure two grants to improve the farm area by adding a new toolshed and replacing and updating the outdoor area with raised garden beds, a walking path, and a pollinator-friendly hedgerow. Check out our blog for recent updates on those projects!

For the future, the current SLC Board has lots of ideas but needs more interested and committed members to help in establishing a clear strategy, identifying key partners, securing funding, and implementing programs.

Board Members:

The SLC Board of Directors plans and organizes events, as well as oversees the finances and day-to-day operation of the organization. Sharing responsibilities, open communications, brainstorming, and teamwork are critical to the continued success of SLC.

Board members serve for two-year terms. They provide the planning, direction and vision to manage the daily operations of the SLC.  The Board of Directors meets monthly. There could be special, ad hoc meetings called in addition to these times.

Interested?

If you are interested in becoming a Board member (or otherwise sharing your skills and knowledge with the SLC) or have any questions, please reach out to Meghan Ochal at meghan@slcsalem.org. Thank you!
